President’s Day: George Washington Or Abraham Lincoln

February 16th, 2009

Presidents day is upon us!  Another day off, or is there something more here.  I must admit, until this year, have always looked at president’s day as the perfect opportunity to head to the hills to do some skiing.  This year there seems to be a bit more with the election of a new president, calling for change.  George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln have long been regarded as our two greatest presidents.  Washington has a school and a state named after him for crying out loud, George Washington University.  I guess Lincoln has a number of schools named after him as well, but they are typically smaller, less well known or junior colleges, I digress.  The point is that Lincoln may be pulling ahead, ahead of Washington in terms of presidential greatness.  In fact Lincoln boasts nearly 16,000 books about him, second to Jesus and Shakespeare.  Who is our greatest president, Lincoln, Washington, or perhaps there is another…something to think about.  For more information check out USA Today’s article about the presidents.

Patience-Yesterday’s Virtue

February 8th, 2009

It’s no secret that we live in a fast paced environment. With advances in technology, “waiting patiently” is no longer necessary. Our society demands instant gratification, and if you can’t keep up with the big boys, you might get left in the pre-technology dust.

Everyday items are being transformed into a high-speed activity. Sending your resume for example, once was once a formal affair. You shower, find that perfect outfit that screams “I’m a go getter!” all for that 1 minute you spend schmoozing the secretary who will hopefully deliver your resume with kind words. Now resumes are being sent through the wireless waves of internet all to appear in the Employer’s inbox with 500 other applicants who also saw the posting on Craigslist. Many employers even require this method of delivery. Both parties (employer and potential employee) can deliver and receive all in comfort of their own home…in their underwear.

Online Teacher of the Year

December 4th, 2008

OCG would like to extend a round of applause to Lorri MacDonald, who has officially been named the first Online Teacher of the Year. Lorri is an online high school teacher and offers introductory to advanced courses in forensic science.

Lorri teaches part-time for Michigan Virtual School, a division of Michigan Virtual University and developed the forensic science courses three years. She also teaches in the traditional classroom as well, where she has more than 20 years of experience at the middle school and high school levels.

Here is what Lorri has to say about the online learning environment:

“Online learning has changed my teaching practice in my face-to-face classroom…I have become more creative and constructivist by encouraging students to build on their own prior knowledge rather than relying on ‘pearls of wisdom’ dropped during lectures.”

She went on to say that “online learning is the way of the future, the way to reach more students in remote places and more students with up-to-date information.”
