Let’s be honest, financing a degree can be expensive, even if it is earned online. In most cases it is cheaper to earn your degree online – you’ll be saving money on external costs such as transportation and administrative fees – but paying for college can still be one of the most expensive things you will buy in your lifetime.

Online degree programs range in costs between a couple hundred dollars per course to more than $20,000 per year. Typically, career training programs are less expensive than associate degrees and tuition increases for each degree as it becomes more advanced.

However, don’t let financing issues keep you from earning your degree – you do have options.

Pell Grants

Pell Grants are need-based, federally issued grants to low-income undergraduate and some postbaccalaureate students. These grants are awarded based on a student’s expected family contribution, the cost of attendance, their enrollment status and if the student will attend school full-time or part-time.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant

This is very similar to the Pell Grant, but is awarded to students in greater financial aid and can be paired with a Pell Grant. Click here to see if you are eligible to apply.

Scholarships

Scholarships are a great way to alleviate some of the costs of tuition. Many states, colleges and even federal programs offer scholarships for student pursuing certain degrees, such as science or those going into teaching. Check out these websites for more information on scholarships:

Loans

Loans are a popular option for many students, but just remember that they have to be paid back. A good place to start is the Stafford Loan. These are federal loans and are the most affordable with low interest rates and deferred principal and interest rates until after graduation.

Work-study programs

Many campus-based schools offer students the ability to finance tuition with work by becoming an employee of the school. Students at the college I attended could work in the library, academic center or any other school facility and have their paycheck deducted from tuition.

Part-time jobs online

There is always the good ole’ way of financing college through a full or part-time job. Nowadays there are many part-time jobs offered online where you can work from the comfort of your home computer completing data entry tasks, affiliate marketing, blogging and other administrative tasks. However, you must be careful to avoid scams or anything asking for a payment to get started.
