Steps to become a teacher in California

  1. To become a teacher in an California elementary or secondary school teacher, applicants must possess their BA degree in a favorite subject from an accredited college.

  2. In order to begin the application process you should have finished or at least began your teacher education program. Download the application now.
  3. Satisfy the Basic Skills requirement: pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). More information about the CBEST
  4. Satisfy the Developing English Language Skills requirement: complete a reading instruction course.
  5. Satisfy the Computer Education requirement: complete foundational computer education course work that includes general and specialized skills in using computers in educational settings or pass the Preliminary Education Technology test.
  6. To teach primary school: earn a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Applicants for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential must pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA).
  7. All new California teachers must have their fingerprints taken and cleared by the California Department of Justice. Click here for information regarding California’s fingerprint policy.
  8. Upon completion of accredited Education program send the following to the California Department of Education.
    • Completed application
    • Official Transcripts of all degrees and credits earned
    • LiveScan fingerprint receipt
    • Verificationof successful completion of required exams.
