Florida Massage Therapy Overview

Florida massage therapists can expect to enjoy expansive growth in their field in the years to come. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-2009 Edition, the field of massage therapy is poised for a 20% growth rate across the country by 2016. As Florida’s population increases and the aging population continues to increase the demand for healthcare professionals in all fields, Florida massage therapists can expect a similar rate of growth in their industry.

Massage therapists practicing in Florida in May of 2006 made an average annual wage of $34,440, according to the May 2006 State Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for Florida published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Considering that most massage therapists are self-employed and work on a part-time basis, a full-time massage therapist can expect to earn a higher salary.

Florida was among the earliest states to regulate the massage therapy industry, enacting a law in 1943 requiring licensure for practitioners. Today, the field of massage therapy in Florida is regulated by the Florida Board of Massage Therapy, a department of the Florida Department of Health. The board requires that applicants for licensure complete at least 500 hours of professional massage therapy training at an approved massage school prior to taking the licensing examination.
