Massage therapists practicing in Florida in May of 2006 made an average annual wage of $34,440, according to the May 2006 State Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for Florida published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Considering that most massage therapists are self-employed and work on a part-time basis, a full-time massage therapist can expect to earn a higher salary.
Florida was among the earliest states to regulate the massage therapy industry, enacting a law in 1943 requiring licensure for practitioners. Today, the field of massage therapy in Florida is regulated by the Florida Board of Massage Therapy, a department of the Florida Department of Health. The board requires that applicants for licensure complete at least 500 hours of professional massage therapy training at an approved massage school prior to taking the licensing examination.
