Georgia Education and Teaching Overview

Teaching in Georgia offers many benefits. Georgia has aligned their teaching standards on a state wide basis through GPS, or Georgia Performance Standards. These standards ensure that students moving from one city to another within the state will experience the same learning expectations. Closing this gap in learning is a definite plus for teachers gaining new students throughout the school year. A new change for teachers in Georgia is the increase in class size by two for the coming school year in elementary grades. Georgia''s class size is still on the low end when compared to other states. In lower grades, Kindergarten through 3rd, the class size will be 23 next school year.

Georgia Teacher Requirements

Financially teaching in Georgia has been more difficult in the past year due to the current state of economics. This financial strain is not solely an issue in Georgia but across all states in the United States. Georgia''s Governor, Sonny Perdue, for the past several years has given each classroom teacher a ''Sonny Card'' worth $100. This money from the state helps to buy needed classroom supplies. Georgia is striving to maintain consistency and excellence in all areas of education. The expectations are high for teachers and students in the state of Georgia.

Georgia Teacher Requirements

There is a definite and critical need for teachers in Georgia, and teaching in Georgia could be a great path for anyone pursuing a teaching career. The need for teachers in Georgia spans all grade levels from pre-kindergarten all the way through high school. Many subjects, such as art and dance, English as a second language, and speech and reading have such a need that anyone that majors in those areas can choose any grade level they desire.

Teaching in Georgia requires at least a four year degree, and may have additional requirements depending on the subject and level. There are many programs available however, that will allow someone to complete their certification while working full time as a teacher.

Georgia has 180 school districts, all of which have similar development programs and qualifications. The largest of these is in Gwinnett County, which is part of metropolitan Atlanta. The tremendous growth in population in this area has spurned a terrific growth in the need for teachers, making the future bright for teaching in Georgia.
