Hawaii Healthcare Overview

Hawaii has some unique healthcare industry problems unto itself, as well as the personnel shortage problems shared by almost all other areas of America.

The Hawaiian healthcare industry has some cultural problems and internal misalignments that are resulting in quite a mess for this state. Across America, healthcare industry shortages are being seen due to a high retirement rate within the large baby-boom generation. As the baby-boom generation retires from the healthcare industry, and all other industries, and moves to Hawaii to retire, healthcare systems are straining to keep up with the increasing demand for all levels of services.

Hawaiian healthcare institutions have cut-back on workforces over budget concerns. This has created a high-stress job environment for some working in healthcare industry jobs that are expected to handle more than their share of responsibilities. In Hawaii, cultural mandates still allow for those in authority to treat lesser positions without a respect level that is generally awarded in other parts of the country, which is resulting in a high job turnover rate as unhappy workers are leaving the industry for greener pastures.

Unfortunately for Hawaii, they have a healthcare training system that is producing qualified individuals who want to enter the job vacancies available in all areas of their healthcare environments. But, qualified newcomers are not experienced enough to be able to handle jobs that have multiple duties beyond normal expectations that are the results of industry budget cutbacks. Jobs exist all over Hawaii within the healthcare industry – but, newcomers are often forced to follow the unhappy long-time healthcare employees off of the islands for employment options.

In simple words, something is going to have to give inside of the Hawaiian healthcare industry over the next few years. This state simply cannot continue to operate without welcoming newly trained individuals into their midst with open arms, benefits, and an income level that allows for the high-cost of living on the islands. Hawaii has a growing senior population that requires a growing healthcare industry so that many are sure that today’s clash between old-world charms and new-world realities is just a momentary hurdle that will pass.

Jobs openings are going to continue to increase for all areas of the healthcare industry. Programs, plans, and governmental intervention may result in Hawaii having a very nice working environment in the future as today’s problems are tackled and remedied by the growing necessity to realign the system.
