Naprapath Career Description
Naprapathy was founded in 1907 by Dr. Oakley Smith and was established on the premise that poor posture, physical trauma and normal wear and tear cause pinched nerves and imbalances, generally along the spine, which lead to chronic conditions and pain. By manipulating the connective tissues and improving alignment, naprapaths assist their clients by providing relief from the pain of fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, joint pain, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches and other chronic, pain-causing conditions.
Naprapathic doctors can be licensed to practice in New Mexico and Illinois; however there are also other states that provide regulations or statutes that allow the practice of naprapathy in some form. There are educational options for students who wish to become licensed naprapaths, as well as options for students licensed in other fields, such as massage therapy, who wish to incorporate naprapathy into their current practice. Prospective naprapathic practitioners will need to confirm the laws and requirements governing the practice of naprapathy in their state prior to selecting a school or starting a practice.
