Licensed massage therapists practicing their trade in Indiana in May 2006 made an average annual wage of $36,850, which is higher than both the average annual wage for other jobs classified as healthcare support occupations ($24,390), and the average annual wage for all workers across industries ($35,190) in Indiana at that time. This data was reported in the May 2006 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for Indiana published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It should be noted that the majority of massage therapists are self-employed and provide services on a part-time basis; therefore, massage therapists who choose to work full-time have the opportunity to earn higher wages.
The Indiana State Board of Massage Therapy regulates massage therapists in Indiana and requires prospective practitioners to complete 500 hours of professional massage therapy training at an approved massage therapy school prior to taking the examination for Indiana licensure.
