Kansas Acute Care Nurse Practioner Programs Overview

Acute Care NP

Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) provide essential care and services to patients who are acutely ill, chronically ill or critically ill, and work in emergency rooms, intensive care or acute care units, surgery centers and other hospital or clinic settings. Nurse practitioners diagnose and treat patients, manage patient care and provide extensive care and services beyond the realm of registered nurses.

To become an ACNP, registered nurses must complete an acute care nurse practitioner program, which is most often a master-level program, gain acute care experience and successfully complete the American Nurses Credentialing Association certification examination. To qualify to enter an acute care NP program, prospective students will need current licensure as a registered nurse and, in most cases, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a period of experience as a nurse in an acute care setting.

Becoming an acute care NP allows registered nurses to significantly increase their earning potential and broaden their career opportunities in the growing field of nursing.
