Steps to become a teacher in Massachusetts

The State of Massachusetts offers various help and support to those who would like to become new classroom teachers within their state. After high school graduation, people who are interested in becoming teachers should start with enrolling into an accredited college to earn their 4-year BA degree.

  1. To become a classroom teacher in the state of Massachusetts, start with earning a BA degree at an accredited college after graduating high school.

  2. Massachusetts offers a Preliminary Teacher License that is valid for 5-years to those who have the BA degree and meet teacher preparation qualifications.
  3. Massachusetts requires you to pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educators License (MTEL). more information on the MTEL Exams.
  4. Massachusetts offers an alternative course to receiving a Preliminary Teacher License to those holding a BA degree that have not had any teacher preparation training. The qualifications for this plan will vary depending upon the age-group or subject matter that you would like to be teaching.
  5. When Massachusetts issues a Preliminary Teacher License, it requires that new teachers complete a one-year induction program under the direction of a mentor.
  6. While working under the 5-year Preliminary Teacher License a person must work a solid 3-years prior to the Professional Teacher License being issued, and must also take a series of college level classes that deal with education, if these classes have not been taken in prior setting.

The state of Massachusetts does not have as many schools as some of the larger states, but they are well-known as a state that is very pleasant to be teaching in.
