Michigan Massage Therapy Overview

Now that Michigan has enacted legislation to ensure proper training and licensure of massage therapists across the state, Michigan massage therapists can expect to see an increase in demand for qualified, professional massage therapists. Nationwide, the massage therapy industry is experiencing an expansive rate of growth, with an anticipated additional 24,000 massage therapy jobs coming available by 2016. This information comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-2009 Edition and shows that massage therapy is rapidly increasing in popularity across the country.

As of May 2008, massage therapists practicing in Michigan earned an average annual wage of $34,630, according to wage survey data collected at that time for the Bureau of Labor Statistics State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates report.

Michigan became the 42nd state to regulate the massage industry when House Bill 5651 was signed into law on January 9, 2009. This bill is also known as Public Act 471 of 2008 and established the Michigan State Board of Massage Therapy. This new law requires that all massage therapists complete 500 hours at an approved massage therapy school and pass a licensing examination in order to become licensed to practice massage therapy in Michigan.
