Montana Massage Therapy Overview

This is an exciting time to become a massage therapist in Montana, or anywhere in the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the massage industry will experience a 20% growth rate between 2006 and 2016, which would bring 24,000 new massage therapy jobs into the industry over the next few years. With a population that is growing and aging, along with the populations in other states, the demand for massage therapy services in Montana can be expected to increase at the same rate.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for Montana, professional massage therapists working in Montana as of May 2008 made an average annual wage of $37,740. This is significantly higher than the average wage earned across all industries in the state at that time, which was $34,190.

Montana became the 43rd state to regulate the massage industry when House Bill 662 was signed into law on May 5, 2009. This new legislation established the Montana Board of Massage Therapy and, as of July 1, 2010, all massage therapy practitioners working in Montana will be required to meet educational and licensure requirements to become licensed to practice in Montana. Until that time, massage practitioners can still expect mandatory requirements for practicing within local jurisdictions.
