After high school graduation or achieving your GED, a job as a New Hampshire classroom
teacher is a very rewarding experience for those interested in a career in education.
How to become a classroom teacher in New Hampshire:
- All classroom teachers in New Hampshire have gone to college to receive their BA
level of degree in education before applying for a job as a teacher. This BA degree
normally takes about four years of study and includes a rounded education that can
be used within the field of education or in other areas as well.
- After receiving your BA degree, the traditional road to take toward becoming a classroom
teacher includes taking teaching preparation classes at the college to allow you
to develop the skills necessary to teach in a classroom.
- Teaching preparation classes in New Hampshire include time spent doing student teaching
under the direction of a real teacher in a classroom.
- Complete teacher competency tests administered by the
ETS organization.
- A fee of $130 is required for the Initial New Hampshire Certification application
processing.
- The rest of the requirements and information will be provided to you by your teacher
education institution. Request the information from the New Hampshire Department
of Education by calling (603) 271-2408.

Alternative Certifications
- New Hampshire offers a plan that allows teachers in areas that have shortages to
enter the classroom while working on their teaching preparation classes.
- New Hampshire also offers a program for those holding a BA degree to become employed
with a school district through a site-based plan certification that will put educational
requirements that must be finished into a contract for completion by a specific
date.
New Hampshire school districts do their own hiring, and it is not done by the State
Department of Education as in some other locations. Teacher license renewal plans
are also under the direction of individual school districts so that each teacher
is judged by a group of their peers to determine license renewal. All teachers in
New Hampshire are expected to participate in ongoing education as a part of their
renewal process which can include college credit classes, personal development hours,
seminars, or appropriate independent study readings.
