The demand for professional massage therapists is rapidly increasing in New Mexico and across the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-2009 Edition, this increase is expected to result in the addition of 24,000 new massage therapy jobs throughout the nation by 2016, which would be a 20% increase over the number of massage therapy jobs available in 2006. According to the May 2008 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for New Mexico, put out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, massage therapists practicing in New Mexico at that time were earning an average annual wage of $40,030, which is well above the average wage earned by workers across all industries in the state at that time ($37,490).

The massage therapy profession is monitored by the New Mexico Massage Therapy Board, which mandates that all massage therapists complete at least 650 hours of professional massage training and education at an approved massage school prior to taking both national and state licensing examinations.
