Substitute teaching allows future teachers to connect with seasoned educators and
administrators who can provide insight and advice on choosing a teaching career,
managing a classroom and gaining essential teaching skills.
If you are considering becoming a teacher in New York, or are enrolled in a New
York teacher certification program, becoming a substitute teacher will provide you
with the opportunity to gain valuable experience and skills, as well as the opportunity
to explore the field of teaching and determine if this is the right career choice
for you.
There is no statewide certification for substitute teachers in New York and each
school district determines the requirements for substitute teaching in that district.
How to Become a Substitute Teacher in New York
- Obtain at least a high school diploma, or the equivalent. This will allow you to
work in some districts and will limit you to only 40 days per school year. This
limit is lifted if you have a New York teaching certificate, or are currently enrolled
in a New York teaching credential program.
- Contact your local school district to request an application packet and a list of
requirements.
- Complete and submit the application packet to the district, along with an application
fee, official transcripts and supporting documents.
- Some districts require a criminal background check.
- New York City requires substitute teachers to hold a bachelor’s degree and to submit
an Application for Substitute Teacher to The New York City Department of Education,
two Substitute Teacher Reference Forms, and a Substitute Teacher Tuberculosis Test
Information Form.
