Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Description

Neonatal NP

Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs) provide direct neonatal care, diagnose and treat pre-term and full-term newborns and infants, work with families to ensure their new baby’s health and provide care to critically ill or acutely ill neonates.

This rewarding career choice allows registered nurses to further their education, expand their employment opportunities and increase their earning potential while providing valuable medical care and services to newborns and new families. As an advanced practice nurse specializing in neonatal care, neonatal NPs provide family-centered care and help to treat and prevent health issues in newborns and infants.

To become a neonatal NP, prospective students will need to complete a master-level degree, generally a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with an emphasis on advanced practice nursing for neonates, and pass a national certification examination. Most master-level programs for prospective neonatal nurse practitioners require applicants to have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), current licensure as a registered nurse (RN), and experience working in neonatal care.
