Oregon Massage Therapy Overview

The demand for massage therapists is on the rise across the nation as the country’s population ages and expands, and medical personnel and patients are becoming aware of the effectiveness of massage therapy as a healing modality. The demand is increasing at such a high rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that there will be an additional 24,000 massage therapy jobs across the country by the year 2016. According to survey data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the May 2008 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates for Oregon, licensed massage therapists made an annual average wage of $53,800. This is considerably higher than the average annual wage of $41,430 for workers in all industries in Oregon at that time.

Prospective massage therapists who want to work in Oregon must go through the Oregon Board of Massage to obtain a license to practice in the state. The board requires that each applicant completes at least 500 hours of training and education at an approved massage school.
